Home Furnishings & Furniture Statistics 2026: Prices, Renovation and Decorating Activity

A citable 2026 reference separating U.S. furniture and household-furnishing price changes from Houzz renovation and decorating participation, with methodology notes and reusable charts.

Furniture and decorating demand can move differently from furniture prices. A useful 2026 reference needs to separate renovation activity, decorating participation and BLS price indexes instead of treating them as one market number.

The short version

What matters most

  1. 01

BLS reported household furnishings and supplies prices up 0.6% over the 12 months ending August 2026.

  2. 02

Furniture and bedding prices were down 0.8% year over year in August 2026.

  3. 03

Bedroom furniture prices were down 0.5%, and living room, kitchen and dining room furniture prices were down 0.8%.

  4. 04

The 2026 Houzz & Home Study reported that 54% of surveyed homeowners renovated in 2025 and 52% decorated.

  5. 05

Houzz reported a $20,000 median renovation spend and a $150,000 90th-percentile spend for 2025 among its renovating homeowner respondents.

01

Keep prices, spending and participation separate

BLS Consumer Price Index data measures changes in consumer prices. Houzz survey data measures renovation or decorating participation and reported project spending among its respondent population.

Those are different concepts. Falling furniture prices do not prove falling furniture sales, and a high renovation participation rate does not describe every U.S. household.

02

Household furnishings and supplies prices were up 0.6% year over year in August

BLS reported the household furnishings and supplies CPI category up 0.6% over the 12 months ending August 2026.

Within that broad category, subcategories moved differently.

BLS CPI category12-month change, Aug 2026
Household furnishings and supplies+0.6%
Furniture and bedding-0.8%
Bedroom furniture-0.5%
Living room, kitchen and dining room furniture-0.8%
Other furniture-1.9%
Clocks, lamps and decorator items-3.1%
Window coverings+5.4%
Furniture and furnishing subcategories moved in different directions in the year to August 2026.
03

Furniture price movement was not uniform

Furniture and bedding as a whole was down 0.8% year over year, while other furniture was down 1.9%. Window coverings, by contrast, were up 5.4%.

This spread is a reminder that a broad “furniture inflation” statement can hide substantial category differences.

04

54% of surveyed Houzz homeowners renovated in 2025

The 2026 U.S. Houzz & Home Study surveyed 20,358 Houzz users, including 10,176 renovating U.S. homeowners. Houzz reported that 54% of surveyed homeowners renovated in 2025.

The same study reported that 52% decorated and 47% undertook repairs. These categories describe different activities and can overlap.

Houzz activity among surveyed homeownersShare
Renovated54%
Decorated52%
Undertook repairs47%
Planned projects in 202650%
Houzz activity measures describe its surveyed homeowner population, not all U.S. households.
05

Median renovation spend held at $20,000

Houzz reported a $20,000 median renovation spend in 2025, unchanged from 2024 after a $24,000 peak in 2023.

At the high end, the 90th percentile reached $150,000 in 2025, up from $140,000 in 2024.

Median and high-end renovation spending describe different points in the Houzz respondent distribution.
06

Half planned projects in 2026

Fifty percent of surveyed homeowners said they planned projects in 2026, down slightly from 52% the prior year.

This is a forward-looking survey measure within the Houzz population, not a forecast of total U.S. renovation spending.

07

Why these datasets belong together, but not in one metric

For researchers, the combination is useful because BLS shows the price environment while Houzz shows reported renovation/decorating activity and project spending.

The correct approach is side-by-side context, not arithmetic that attempts to convert one dataset into the other.

Price indexes and participation surveys can be shown together for context, but they should not be combined into one rate.
08

Implications for interiors and shopping research

Price declines in several furniture categories can coexist with active renovation and decorating behavior. That can affect how publishers frame affordability, replacement cycles and project timing.

By Sady uses the findings to contextualize editorial guides rather than to predict sales.

09

Methodology and citation notes

BLS CPI is a price index for U.S. consumers and should be cited with the month and category. Houzz’s study reflects its surveyed users and renovating homeowner respondents.

The 2026 Houzz & Home Study reports on 2025 activity and 2026 plans. Keep the activity year separate from the publication year.

10

Selected data and source reuse

The companion CSV collects selected figures from the cited public sources. Researchers should verify the original BLS and Houzz pages for updates, revisions and detailed definitions.

Charts should label BLS price changes separately from Houzz participation and project spending.

  • Selected-data CSV: /data/home-furnishings-furniture-price-statistics-2026.csv
  • BLS price period: 12 months ending August 2026.
  • Houzz activity period: 2025, with 2026 project plans.
  • Last editorial data check: October 2, 2026.
